Shit Load of Mashed Potatoes Day is a proposed holiday suggested by Danny's Dad in The Return Of The Tourettes Guy (Part 3). It is considered synonymous to Thanksgiving, observed in the same fashion as the landmark occasion provided that each participant makes and brings their own mashed potatoes. Danny's Dad conceived the holiday when everybody brought mashed potatoes instead of additional Thanksgiving dishes. Since its 2010 inception, Shit Load of Mashed Potatoes Day has been celebrated by the Tourettes Guy community on a regular basis.
However, this potato bread recipe calls for 1/3 cup water. This is the minimum that works well. More liquid should only be added after you let the dough knead in your mixer for several minutes. If it does not come together, add a splash (a tablespoon) and mix again.
Happy Mashed Potato Day!
We just polished off 1/2 this bread before it had a chance to cool! Super easy to make and we used up leftover mashed potatoes from Thanksgiving which were seasoned with onion, garlic and cream cheese. Thank you so much for the recipe, will keep this.
I was not sure if the recipe required just mashed potato, or finished mash potato with milk, butter etc. I erred on the side of just mashed potato, and this required me to add about an extra 2/3 cup of water to make the dough. It turned out very well. I also baked it at 400F for 2 small round loaves, per one of the comments. It would be great with some crumbled rosemary added in to the dough for a savoury bread.
Hi Kiwi! The recipe calls for plain mashed potatoes, but I often use my leftover potato mash (with butter, milk, etc) and it always turns out well. The only difference you might notice is the consistency of the dough but it has never affected the final result. Sometimes it might need more water and this is due to the potato type, flour (some contain more moisture, other less) and also the humidity where you live. I will try to improve the recipe and add more notes for future bread makers but all in all it is a very easy recipe that always turn out great.
Hi Eric. Thanks for your comment. You are right. The conversions will never be the same. With potatoes, it would depend how well they would be packed in a cup for example. With flour, the measurement can vary from 120 to 150 grams, depending how you measure and that is why you can see different numbers on different websites. This is quite a forgiving recipe so the difference does not matter so much here but I will be updating this recipe so that it is clear for everyone. Hope this helps and you will come back in a week or so to check the improved recipe.
TikToker Jake Musser, who goes by @mvsser, went viral after posting his Friendsgiving mashed potatoes hack: he purchased them from a Kentucky Fried Chicken location. Then, he poured them all into a bowl he bought from Target.
According to the Sabra survey, over 40 percent of Americans still expect the traditional dishes to be on the table at their next gathering. A quarter of the guests serve up guacamole or hummus instead. Or even KFC mashed potatoes.
Since the post has gone viral, some people think KFC mashed potato is not a good substitute for homemade mashed potatoes. While others believe it is an incredible hack when you are busy, especially if you are not a great cook.
Now you can enjoy your delicious mashed potatoes as a side to your favorite dish! Beef Stew, Pot Roast, Turkey, Chicken, whatever tickles your fancy! If you enjoy flavored mashed potatoes you can also add things like ranch, bacon, chives, garlic, and so on.
With that in mind, I tried to pair down this classic mashed potato recipe to just the basics. No complicated techniques, and only 30 minutes of mostly hands-off time required from start to finish. Boom!
Having said that, you can be assured that this recipe is every bit as creamy, smooth and delicious as the homemade mashed potatoes you grew up with. And if you're a garlic mashed potatoes fan, we've got you covered too. ?
Personally, I love using Yukon Gold or other yellow potatoes for mashed potato recipes, but brown Russet potatoes are definitely a close second. Sometimes I'll mix the two in the same recipe and it all works out great.
Flavor and texture wise, I find that Yukon Gold are just a little touch more buttery and creamy--but it's a subtle difference and the all-versatile Russet potato also makes a super delicious and creamy mashed potato dish.
The nice thing about using yellow or red potatoes is that you can leave the skin on and they're still so delicious! Generally, and especially if I'm leaving the skin on, I'll try to look for organic potatoes to cut down on any pesticides or sprays. Leaving the skin on also nets more fiber in the finished dish: a win-win.
First, peel the potatoes (or you can leave the skins on if using Yukon Gold or red potatoes.) Then, chop them into 1-inch thick pieces, place in a large pot, and cover with cold water until the water is just covering the potatoes.
Heat the pot of water and potatoes on the stove over high heat until it boils, and then reduce the heat to medium and cook for 15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender. Using a large colander, carefully drain potatoes over the sink.
Add some garlic powder (if using), salt and pepper over potatoes and use a hand mixer or potato masher to start mashing the potatoes. Slowly pour the warmed butter and milk mixture over the potatoes and keep blending or mashing until your desired consistency is reached.
Hi Shae, I like russets the very best. But often, I have red potatoes in my home, so I used those for this recipe. I also like the red flecks of potato in my mashed potatoes. I'm not a fan of Yukons for mashed potatoes.
Trev and Shan,Are russets available? Russets make awesome mashed potatoes. As the reader above you suggested, many people like Yukons. They are not my favorite. I think almost any type of potato will work. If you want to test the recipe out, just boil a single potato, peel and then mash with a little butter and half and half and test out the texture. Let us know what you decide! I have family in Okinawa and Tokyo. Such a beautiful country!

Out here in Seattle, WA, we have some pretty rainy days. Despite the unpredictable weather, we love to gather our friends and family for a big Sunday dinner. When preparing the menu, I know that mashed potatoes will always be a crowd-pleaser!
There are a lot of potatoes out there to choose from, but nothing makes a better bowl of mashed potatoes than a Yukon Gold. They have a beautiful golden color and a naturally buttery taste. Feel free to use Russets or red potatoes if you wish, but Yukons are superior.
I too make it with whipped cream and butter!!!!! isnt it delicious!!!! thats my favorite way to make mashed potatoes too!!! ur husband is right , the more butter, the better it tastes!!!! mmm, I want some now!! ?
